Third Day In Göttingen!

January 7, 2024

Most of today was spent touring Wartburg Castle, built in the 11th century, with our tour guide Frank. The castle was filled with troves of artwork, artifacts, and architecture (as well as doves); and had an incredible view of one of the towns near the castle.

There were so many pieces of art and collections of artifacts in the castle that it was difficult to choose what to show, but here are some of my favorites:

A sword and shield with the family crest
This animal shaped water container/pourer with a concerningly human face

A creature of unidentifiable species
A carving of a man being devoured by what is presumably a griphon

A very unhappy lion (maybe he's just smiling, emotions can be difficult to tell on animals)
This stanced up lectern

After the tour of the castle, we returned to the hotel and a number of us got dinner at Kartoffelhaus. Afterwards, a smaller group attempted to find the planets on the planet walk. We were unsuccessful in our search for Pluto (maybe because its not considered a planet anymore), but we did find a tower in the middle of the woods where Pluto should have been. Thankfully, we were able to find Neptune, so it wasn't all for naught.
