We started our day off as usual today with breakfast at the Hostel; however, after that, we transitioned class into our first day of presentations. We learned about 5 incredible mathematicians and the barriers they faced in their mathematical journeys (Marjorie Lee Browne, Mary Lucy Cartwright, Graciela Salicrup, Maria Gaetana Agnesi, and Srinivasa Ramanujan), and I presented about the topic of first-generation college students in STEM. I think it’s fair to say we all learned a lot, and I’m looking forward to see who/what we learn about over the next two days of presentations!
From there, myself and a sizable group went out for yet another IKEA lunch. It was a solid option per usual, but it seems the IKEA trend may be coming to a close as some members of the group plan to try out other spots for lunch.
From there, we went to the Vasa museum.
This ship was commissioned by the King of Sweden, Gustavus Adolphus, in the 1600s and it took 2 years to build. There was intricate woodwork done along with painting on the outside to intimidate enemies when the warship arrived in a war zone. No one was intimidated by it, and the king never saw it though, because it sunk in the first 20-45 minutes of its maiden voyage due to poor design and winds. Extensive work has been done to keep the ship intact after it was brought to the surface 300+ years after sinking, and this exhibition was well worth visiting.
From the museum, we went our separate ways for the evening. A large group went to to a burger and pizza (or lacktherof) restaurant. When we ordered our food, we were informed they could not serve pizza for the rest of the night which left one of our vegetarian members without an option. Thankfully the staff was attentive and realized what had happened, and they whipped up a vegetarian burger on the house. Otherwise, cheeseburgers and fish and chips were the meals of choice.
Another unexpected meal experience was shared as well:
Today I tried to figure out how to use the buses by myself without getting lost. Fortunately, I ended up in the destination I wanted (and got a matcha)! I stopped by Café Blåbär for lunch, and they had delicious sandwiches! :D The salad gave me a scare because I found small shrimp in it (I am allergic to shrimp) but other than that the place was very good and welcoming! - Ashley
All in all, it’s another successful day for Math-257’s adventures in Sweden for the books!
Signing off,
Alex Freihammer
