Free Weekend Day 3

January 15, 2024

Today was the third day of the free weekend and second full day.

I was in Bavaria for the first two days of the free weekend, so I started the day in Unterweißenkirchen, where I was staying with family.

Normally, the Bavarian Alps would be visible from here, but it was too foggy this morning to see them.

After breakfast, we drove to Salzburg, Austria, which was only about 40 minutes away. We started by walking around the city, where we saw the house where Mozart was born, the Kollegiankirche (Collegiate Church), and lots of little passageways between shops that lead from one street to another.

Inside the church, there were four smaller alters associated with the four main subjects of the university: medicine, theology, law, and philosophy. This picture is of the theology altar, represented by the painting of Thomas Aquinas.

This is the Salzach river that runs through Salzburg. At the top of the hill is the Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe.

Next we toured the cathedral and residence, where the Prince Archbishops who ruled Salzburg lived.

A few of the photos from the residence. The upper left shows some of the paintings from a gallery in the museum. The upper middle is the fountain of Hercules. Upper right is a private altar of the Prince-Archbishops behind a hidden door. Bottom left is the writing room in the residence. Bottom middle is one of many ceiling paintings throughout the building. Lastly, bottom right is the Hohensalzburg Fortress again, alongside an art piece called Sphaera by Stephen Balkenhol.

At the end of the day, we drove to Munich to get ready for the last day of the free weekend tomorrow!
