Free Weekend Day 2

Saturday January 13th is the second day of our free weekend, and the first full day!

This morning, nine of my classmates and I woke up in Prague! We had a slow start to our day since we were pretty tired from traveling yesterday evening. We made breakfast and then set out into Prague!

We made a quick stop at a nearby cafe, and then headed off to our first destination of the day, Old Town Square:

My first impression was that the square was massive! There were a lot of people going about their days and also tourists like us taking in the sights. We made our way over to the Astronomical Clock in the square, the oldest astronomical clock still in operation, which was constructed in 1410!

Then we went inside the Old Town Hall, the building the astronomical clock is attached to. Inside are various rooms with seemingly different functions related to running a medieval town, although much of this is guesswork since we did not get a guided tour.

Then we climbed the tower! The views from the top were spectacular, though our time was limited due to the cold air outside. We could see all of Prague 1, and most of the other districts of Prague, and even the castle we are hoping to visit tomorrow!

Then we went to lunch at a good Middle Eastern place, and we were seated next to a fish tank! Unfortunately one of the fish in it was dead. Even worse, as we were sitting at the table, hungry, one of the other fish in the tank comes up and tries to take a bite out of the dead one! A good way to ruin an appetite, but the food was good regardless.

Our next stop was the National Museum in Prague. The museum was very grand, with many interesting natural history and Czech history exhibits. They even had a minerals exhibit (my favorite), so we got to make up for the cancellation of our visit to the Minerals and Mathematics Museum in Göttingen.

We were pretty tired after a full day of activities, so for dinner we went to the pho place just across the street from our AirBnB for some cheap, filling food. Overall it was a good first day of our free weekend in Prague! Stay tuned for some more free weekend activities from our class!
