First day in Nuremberg

January 8th, 2024

We started off our day this morning with breakfast and saying “tschüss” to our time in Göttingen. After a brief breakfast and quick checkout, we left for the train station only to discover a 35 minute delay. We passed the time by getting food for the train and playing games in the cold station.

While on the train and shortly after arriving at the hotel, groups met to discuss plans for this weekend since nationwide German train strikes starting Wednesday and ending Friday are delaying or changing our transportation decisions. Most groups have changed their current plans, and we are more confident in our routes to reach our free weekend destinations.

While getting off the train, we were immediately struck by the size of the city, and it is clear there will be much more to explore in the coming days. After a short break, we took a (chilly) guided tour of Nuremberg.

There are many historical buildings in Nuremberg with the main point of our tour focusing on its castle and other related medieval-period history. All around the city are watchtowers and other fortifications. There are also many old buildings such as churches and restored homes despite 70% of the city being destroyed near the end of World War 2. There is also an abundance of art around the buildings as citizens and businesses were encouraged add art to the city after the war.

Last but not least, groups split off for a much needed dinner after our long walk. One group went out for pizza and another for soup and sushi. As for the pizza group, we had some trouble envisioning what a 33cm pizza would look like even though we knew the conversion in inches, but the portions were perfect to satisfy our post-walk hunger.
