Day 3 in Nuremburg!

Thursday, 1/11

The rail strike strikes again! The original plan for today was to have another DEI discussion in the morning and then hop onto a train toward Bamberg (about an hour north of Nuremburg) while making a stop in Erlangen to see Emmy Noether's home. Unfortunately, there is an ongoing rail strike that we found out about on Monday that caused a little hitch in our schedule. We were able to switch the trip to next Tuesday and Professor Dietz so graciously allowed us to have a half-day today!

Our morning DEI discussion were based on Nicole Joseph's "Making Black Girls Count in Mathematics Education" and three assigned reading based on different aspects of mathematics inside the classroom. Race and bias is a huge concern in the education and while there is a growing awareness of them as issues, there are very little solutions to combat them. It was interesting to hear other individuals talk about the situations outlined in their papers, but also some things they or their friends have experienced at St. Olaf.

Afterwards, I headed to Stadtpark. Here are some of the views from the walk to the park:

The park itself was large fun to explore. The lake was frozen over and the walkway was a little bare, but I'm sure everything would look beautiful when the trees and flowers are blooming.

From there, I went to the Nuremburg Castle to take the tour of the museum and go up the Sinwell Tower. Other groups went to the Future Museum as well as the Documentation Center.

I continued my day walking around the city and going into some shops! For dinner, I went to Bruderherz which served German cuisine. As our free weekend starts tomorrow afternoon, I went back in early to get things packed up and called it a day!

Cheers,

Faith Yi
