Arrival day: Thursday, January 4

Updated: Jan 20, 2024

Most of us left the US on Wednesday, including 6 students and 2 professors who left from MSP.

After 7 hours of flying where the movie selection was pitiful and most of us didn't sleep much at all, the 8 landed in Amsterdam. Our second leg took us to Frankfurt, where we met up with 4 more students. The 12 got train tickets for our third leg of the trip that took us to Göttingen. Finally, all 20 of us were together!

Most of us took a walk around town before dinner. It was sprinkling a bit, but not cold. We walked down a few pedestrian shopping streets, some some old churches, oodles of old half-timbered homes, and we walked atop a portion of the old city wall.

We had a 7:30pm reservation at Villa Cuba for dinner, which was a 10 minute walk from our hotel. It was a good meal, but a bit of a comedy of errors. We were brought so many giant appetizer plates that (i) we didn't finish them by a long shot, and (ii) we started to wonder if they were our full "family style" meal. In true European style, our waitress left us alone for an hour with the platters, then finally brought our actual (huge) dinners and left us for another hour until, oh yeah, our big desserts were delivered! We had American style portions at a German pace.
